Poker betting rules
Betting is a very important act in the game of poker and one must know the rules of it while playing the game. Different games can be played with different types of bets and there are small variations in card rooms. When a poker game starts, the players are seen to be acting in turn and that takes place in the clockwise direction.
When the first bet is made in the game, it is called as the opening the round. On the first round, it is also called as the opening the pot. After a bet has been made by a player, the person sitting next to him in the clockwise direction will get the next chance to match or increase the bet. When a player matches a bet or increases it, it is called a call. When a player does not have the best hand, then it is called a crying call.
A player may even wish to hold his cards without calling any bet. This is referred to as pass or check and it is equivalent to the betting level of zero. The rules may vary in blind poker games. In such games, players do not check on the opening rounds since the blinds are live bets and players call them or raise them just to remain in the hand. If a player posts the big blind, then he has got the right to raise on the first round and it is called the option. It may so happen that no other player has raised the option and even if he refuses to raise it, then it is known as check his option. If it is found that all the players have checked, then the betting round is over and no extra money gets placed in the pot. In the poker game, this is known as a free round or free card. A better way to signify the checking is to tap the table either with a fist or with open hand or with knuckles.
If a player increases the size of the bet, he is said to have made a raise. A player can further increase this amount and this is known as a re-raise. There is also a poker betting rule that if anybody wants to make an increase of the bet, he must increase it by a certain minimum amount. If anybody raises a bet of $1 on a current bet of $50, then it is not going to have any effect on the game. On the other hand, such nuisance raises takes a lot of time as all others are making a call and really makes the game slow in the long term. In some casinos, it has been found that some caps have been limited to the total numbers of raises in a poker game. If it is a four raise rule, the players can increase the bet by four times in that particular game. Generally, all poker games see that there are some forced bets to make an initial stake for the players to play the game.
